Abstract |
The report describes Australian experience in using electrostatic precipitators (ESP's) to collect fly ash produced by the combustion of low-sulfur bituminous coal in pulverized-fired boilers. It includes typical ESP dimensions and operating parameters, together with a survey of the main problems and experience obtained in collecting this fly ash. ESP performance has been improved by operating at low temperatures and by conditioning the flue gas with SO3 and NH3. It describes various conditioning injection systems and discusses the effectiveness of the agents on the different ashes. It evaluates procedures used in pilot, technical scale, and laboratory tests that were carried out to determine the fly ash characteristics, because the sulfur content of the coal cannot be used reliable to predict ESP properties of fly ash.
