Abstract The overall objectives of this study are to characterize and assess the fate and effects of discharges from offshore oil and gas drilling and production activities. Four specific objectives were outlined by EPA: Present overall conclusions on the fate and effects of drilling fluids and cuttings discharged to the marine environment; Describe types and quantities from offshore drilling and production; Describe transport phenomena to which discharges will be subjected, including physical, chemical, and biological processes; and Present information on the acute and chronic toxicity of drilling fluids and produced waters on marine organisms.
