Abstract |
This report describes basic research on the subject of formation and detection of metallic particles ranging from 5 to 5000 nm in diameter. Particulate matter is formed in a flowing inert gas by homogeneous nucleation from the vapor phase. Metals used in the work done under this grant include Na, K, Li, Rb, Cs, Cd, Mg, Zn, and Pb. Specific objectives of this project are necessarily broad and openended as present understanding of particle formation and growth mechanism is still in an early state of development. Particulate matter with diameters less than 100 nm plays an important role in atmospheric pollution, and it was hoped that research would contribute to the detection, measurement, and/or control of this problem. |
