||Past research has shown that ozone (O3) alone or in combination with sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is responsible for up to 90% of the crop losses in the U.S. caused by air pollution. The National Crop Loss Assessment Network (NCLAN) was set up to determine more accurately crop loss from these air pollutants. The program will define the relationships between yields of major agricultural crops and doses of O3, SO2, NO2, and their mixtures. The program is also designed to advance the understanding of cause-effect relationships with the intent of developing simulation models. In 1980 the NCLAN program used open-top field chambers at four regional sites. All sites used a series of five O3 concentrations that were replicated four times with a different crop at each site (Northeast-red kidney bean, Southeast-peanut and turnip, Central-soybean, Southwest-head lettuce).
