Abstract |
The effects and means of correcting combined sewer overflows and separate storm and sanitary sewer discharges were inventoried on a national basis in 1967 and compiled. On-site personal interviews with the public officials of approximately 900 communities in the United States collected over 250,000 pieces of data which have been analysed and grouped by State, river basin, and population group to define the problems of combined sewer facilities and overflows. Nationwide projections were made for major items of interest including area and population served by combined sewers, overflow locations, type and number of regulators, associated land and water uses, estimates of costs for sewer separation by States, alternate control and/or treatment methods, and consideration of other aspects of the overall problem. |
