Abstract The Nonpoint Source Pollutant Loading (NPS) Model was applied to one urban and two small agricultural watersheds to simulate nutrient loadings in surface runoff. Since the NPS Model simulates all nonpoint pollutants as a function of sediment loss, the key question was whether sediment is a reliable indicator of nutrients in surface runoff. Both the literature surveyed and the results of this work indicate Total nitrogen (N) and Total phosphorus (P) can be reasonably simulated in this manner. Also, organic components of N and P can be simulated since they are generally associated with sediment and comprise a major portion of the total nutrients in surface runoff.
