Abstract |
Point-of-use treatment devices can be effective for inorganic contaminant removal. The paper describes work that was done investigating point-of-use treatment systems for arsenic removal in Alaska and Oregon. Small treatment systems utilizing individual activated alumina, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis treatment techniques were field tested on water naturally contaminated with arsenic. The treatment systems were used on waters containing arsenic concentration ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mg/L and were successful in lowering the effluent arsenic concentration to below the maximum contaminant level of 0.05 mg/L. The treatment systems were located in private homes (two in Alaska, two in Oregon) and were in operation for two to four years. |
