Abstract |
A waste treatment system was installed in conjunction with an existing confined swine feeding operation at Schuster Farms, Gower, MO. The system consisted of a concrete aeration tank equipped with mechanical surface aerators, followed by a settling pond. Wastes from the 1,000-hog feeding operation were flushed through a gutter in the concrete feeding floor into the aeration tank, where they were aerobically digested. All aeration tank discharges were retained in the settling pond where the liquids evaporated. The waste treatment facility operated continuously and dependably over a two-year period, with treatment efficiency averaging 90% to 95%. The system effectively controlled objectionable odors and insects, contained all liquid runoff emanating from the feeding operation, and left only a dry, inert residue suitable for land disposal. Thus, total environmental control was achieved at a cost of approximately $1.00 per hog, or 1/2 cent per pound of weight gained while on the feeding floor. |
