Abstract |
Seventy percent of the energy produced in a nuclear power reactor is rejected to the environment as low quality heat. One possible use of this heat source is for domestic waste water treatment. The report briefly examines a ferric-chloride, powered activated carbon and an aluminum sulfate, powered activated carbon physical-chemical system in a one-step process as a function of temperature (20-80C). COD, suspended solids, turbidity and phosphorus removals were used to monitor performance. Significant improvement in pollutant removals was obtained at higher temperatures with the optimum results occurring between 50 and 60C. Since urban waste water flow and electric power usage are population-dependent and the system optimum treatment temperature coincides with waste heat characteristics, a combined powerplant-waste water system would generate recycle water.
