||Responding to an often repeated Academy recommendation suggesting development of anticipatory research programs by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Office of Research and Development requested that the Environmental Studies Board conduct a workshop to address a long-range environmental outlook. It was recognized at the outset that a more narrow focus would be needed in order to plan a useful meeting. Thus, four general areas were chosen from among a wide range of potential topics. Task groups were established to discuss future trends in energy, agriculture, toxic substances, and hazards of facility siting and the potential environmental problems that may develop. The charge for each group was to identify specific future problems, establish the priority of importance and recommend research that would assist EPA and other agencies in resolving these problems.
