Abstract |
This study was conducted to examine the effect of milk recovery plans on pollution prevention. The feasibility of reducing the waste load by recovering and reusing milk solids lost from milk receiving, cleaning-in-place, and the high-temperature-short-time system (HTST) was examined. A review of the tanker rinse recovery system was conducted and current regulations were examined for uses of recovered milk solids and water-milk blends. Recovery plants, new products and land disposal were explored for the use or dicharge of recovered milk solids. It was found that by modifying the HTST recovery system and revising the CIP system for rinse recovery, annual benefits totaling $418,000 for product use and $138,000 for product salvage could be realized. |
