Abstract A test program was peformed at the Environmental Protection Agency Incineration Research Facility to study the effectiveness of incineration at low-to-moderate temperatures in decontaminating soils containing organic compounds with different volatilities (boiling points). The data demonstrate that compound volatility and treatment temperature are the key parameters. Elevated solid temperature favors decontamination. The extent of decontamination increases with time. The data suggest that a high temperature and a long treatment time are likely to result in the desired level of decontamination. Agitation can also increase the decontamination process of contaminated soils.
