Abstract | Drinking water contamination is one of the most important environmental risks, and disease-causing microbial contaminants (i.e., bacteria, protozoa, and viruses) are probably the greatest remaining health risk management challenge for drinking water suppliers according to EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB), an independent panel of experts established by Congress (U.S. EPA/SAB, 1990). The proposed Long Term Enhanced Surface Water Treatment and Filter Backwash Rule (LT1FBR) undertakes the challenge to improve the control of microbial pathogens such as Cryptosporidium in public drinking water systems. | |||||||||||
