Abstract |
The 1,500-acre Ciba-Geigy site is an active chemical manufacturer in an industrial area in McIntosh, Washington County, Alabama. From 1952 to present, Ciba-Geigy, formerly Geigy Chemical Corporation, has produced various chemicals including DDT, laundry products, herbicides, insecticides, agricultural chelating agents, sequestering agents, plastic resins and additives, antioxidants, and specialty chemicals. In 1985, EPA issued a RCRA permit that included a corrective action plan requiring Ciba-Geigy to remove and treat ground water and surface water contamination at the site. In 1987, as part of the corrective action plan requirements, Ciba-Geigy installed an additional wastewater treatment system and ground water monitoring wells. The ROD addresses highly contaminated soil and sludge at 10 of the 11 former waste management areas as OU2. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, sludge, and debris are VOCs including benzene and toluene; other organics including PCBs and pesticides (e.g., DDT); and metals including lead. The selected remedial action for the site is included. |
