Abstract |
Recent efforts by the paper industry, market forces, and regulatory groups have identified several new and/or modified technologies to limit dioxins and furans (particularly 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF) in kraft bleach plant effluents and paper products. By using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reinforced extractions (EOP or EP) to do some of the work of existing C and D (chlorine dioxide) states, chlorine charges can be cut and existing ClO2 charges redistributed to implement high-ClO2-substitution bleaching without investing in ClO2 capacity or a multistep C stage. To date, mill trials using this H2O2-enhanced bleaching strategy have resulted in significant reductions of dioxins, AOX and chloroform. |
