Abstract There is a growing recognition of the special difficulties imposed on small communities in meeting their wastewater treatment and disposal needs. Congress recognized this need by setting aside 4 percent of each rural state's construction grant allocation for funding alternative systems in small communities. Small communities are likely to be faced with high per capita costs for wastewater transport, treatment, and disposal. The purpose of the course is to alert the review personnel (federal, state, and local) to the special needs and circumstances of small communities. It will improve their understanding of the differences in facilities planning between large sewered communities and the small rural communities. The participants will gain a working knowledge of the design techniques for both conventional and on-site treatment, and alternative conveyance systems appropriate to small communities. The participants will study the alternative management systems for the small communities.
