Abstract |
To improve our understanding, this study determines whether carbon dioxide (CO2) which stimulates C and N, but inhibits H2O cycling in an ecosystem; affects the response of a tree species to ozone (O3) which inhibits C,N, and H2O cycling. The ponderosa pine soil/tree seedling system is used, as it is widespread in the western U.S., and is known to be affected individually by both increasing CO2 and O3. The study utilizes chambered 'terracosms', to examine above- and below-ground responses. The study tests three hypothesis: (1) elevated O decreases C, N and H2O cycling rates; (2) elevated CO2 increases C, N, and decreases H2O cycling rates; and (3) elevated CO2 eliminates negative effects of O3 and C and N cycling rates and has an additive negative effect on H2O cycling rates. |
