Abstract The technology and environmental effects associated with production of energy from new or advanced sources are reviewed. These include solar, geothermal, oil shale, solid wastes, underground coal gasification, and hydrogen energy sources. Projections to the year 2000 of levels of energy production from the first four of these sources are presented. Environmental impacts on air and water quality, and land use are derived per unit of energy. Levels of pollutant emissions and other environmental effects of the development of these advanced energy sources are projected. Impacts likely to require control measures are identified. Subjects for research and development directed toward control of environmental impacts are recommended. These recommendations are incorporated into a research and development plan. Approximate priority assignments derived from consideration of the timing of development and the importance and degree of definition of the identified environmental effects are given.
