Abstract The report gives results of an investigation of the absorption of odorous pollutants by active manganese dioxide (MnO2). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), mercaptans, and an amine were adsorbed in a fixed bed of active MnO2 (impregnated on sawdust) and several activated carbons. Pollutant removal efficiencies were measured as functions of H2S concentration, flow rate, particle size, relative humidity, and bed depth. The outlet concentration of H2S from the MnO2-sawdust bed is considerably below that from an activated charcoal bed of the same volume and at the same conditions. The useful capacity of the MnO2-sawdust bed can be greater than four times that of activated carbon. Fundamental studies of the MnO2-sawdust were carried out and preliminary correlations were made between bed efficiency and capacity and filter characteristics such as surface area, percent Mn, K, Na, and C, and the Mn valence state.
