||Dalapon is a herbicide used to control grasses in a wide variety of crops and in a number of noncrop applications, such as along drainage ditches and railroads and in industrial areas. Acute toxicity data indicate that dalapon has a low order of toxicity in mammals, with a range of LD50 values of 4 to 9 g/kg. The dry powder or a concentrated solution can be irritating to the eyes or skin if not removed by washing. Short-term multiple dose studies suggest that the toxicity of the compound is not cumulative. There were also increased incidences of benign lung adenomas and cystadenomas of the harderian gland in male mice fed dalapon for 2 years. In a three-generation reproduction study in rats, no reproductive effects were found in rats administered dalapon in the diet at levels up to 3,000 ppm (150 mg/kg/day). In a rabbit teratogenicity study, decreased body weights were noted in pups from dams receiving oral doses of 300 mg/kg/day.
