Abstract The Kentucky Avenue Wellfield site is an inactive municipal water supply in Horseheads, Chemung County, New York. The site overlies the Newtown Creek Aquifer, a major source of water in the area. The wellfield was established in 1962, when a water supply was needed for a food processing plant. In 1980, elevated levels of TCE were discovered in ground water, and the wellfield was closed. Subsequent onsite investigations by the State and EPA identified additional onsite contamination by VOCs and metals. In 1985 and 1986, a removal action by EPA required the connection of 56 homes that were served by the wellfield to the public water distribution system as an alternate water supply. The primary source of this contamination was determined to be from the disposal of industrial wastes in lagoons or land areas and from industrial spills, including ones from a nearby Westinghouse facility. The ROD addresses management of migration of ground water contaminants. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water at VOCs including TCE and xylenes; and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead.
