Abstract The research describes procedures and the results obtained to evaluate the baseline (or existing) watershed quality within the basin. Three kinds of procedures were employed: physical (or habitat related), chemical (surface and sediment pore water quality) and biological (toxicological and macroinvertebrate assessments). Aquatic insects were the major macroinvertebrate component found at all sites. Significant associations were found between ammonia nitrogen and sediment toxicity. Correlations were also obtained with habitat and the macroinvertebrate measurements.
