Abstract |
This is slightly toxic orally having an LD(sub 50) in rats of 1600-3200 mg/kg and in guinea pigs of 800-1600 mg/kg. The intraperitoneal LD(sub 50) is 800-1600 mg/kg in rats and 200-400 mg/kg in guinea pigs. It is a slight skin irritant when held in occluded contact with skin for 24 hours. It is absorbed through the skin .causing death at less than 5 ml/kg in guinea pigs. Inhalation of heated vapors at 400 ppm (calculated) caused no death in rats. Smyth gives the rat oral LD(sub 50) as 3 g/kg and the guinea pig skin LD(sub 50) at 6.3 ml/kg. Saturated vapor exposure for 8 hours caused no deaths. Severe eye irritation resulted in rabbits. This acid appears to be generally of low toxicity. Corneal damage may result from contact and skin absorption can occur. No data is available on the effects of repeated doses or on warning properties of the vapor. By analogy to related aliphatic acids it could be assumed that cumulative toxicity would not be great. The low volatility limits the hazard for use at room temperature. |
