Abstract At a 2.9 million gallon per day well contaminated with several volatile organic compounds (VOCs), principally trichloroethylene (TCE), a packed tower aerator (PTA) was pilot tested, designed, constructed and monitored during its first seven months of operation. Pilot testing was based on gas/liquid mass transfer theory. Calculated mass transfer coefficients coupled with this theory were used to design the full-scale aerator for TCE control. In addition to liquid-phase VOCs, other parameters including bacteria, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, calcium, alkalinity, turbidity, particle counts, noise, and air-phase VOCs were monitored to assess the secondary effects of aeration.
