Abstract A relative trophic state index for lake classification was developed using six key water quality parameters. The data base was approximately 200 lakes and reservoirs in northeast and north central United States which had been included in the National Eutrophication Survey during 1972-73. Each lake was given an index number and was also classified according to the conventional terminology of oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic. The method can be used to classify a lake of unknown trophic condition if the proper parameters have been measured.
