Abstract The National Contingency Plan requires that a baseline risk assessment be conducted by the lead agency during the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) in order to 'characterize the current and potential threats to human health and the environment'. The directive discusses the reasons for ecological risk assessments and their role in the baseline risk assessment.
