Abstract |
The Laurel Park site is located in the town of Naugatuck, New Haven County, Connecticut. The landfill, occupying about 19-acres of the 35-acre site, lies entirely within the drainage basin of the Naugatuck River. Additionally, the landfill is located on a hill in close proximity to fractured bedrock and bedrock aquifer. It is assumed that waste disposal actions began in the late 1940s. It was common practice to burn some of the waste brought to the site. Operational problems at the landfill were supported in the early 1960s. Complaints included chemical spills on roads leading to the landfill, large quantities of black acid smoke, odors, and blowing litter. Construction of a leachate collection system was completed in 1984. The primary contaminants of concern affecting ground water, soil, surface water, and sediments include: VOCs, organics, and metals. The selected remedial action for the site includes: installation of a RCRA cap over all waste disposal areas; rehabilitation of existing leachate collection system, supplemented by a shallow ground water extraction system consisting of a French drain and/or ground water extraction wells, with discharge and offsite treatment at the Naugatuck Water Pollution Control Facility (NWPCF); and monitoring of all media. |
