Abstract |
The 4-acre First Piedmont Quarry Route 719 site is an inactive industrial and agricultural landfill located north of the city of Danville in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The landfill is a ground water discharge area for an underlying aquifer draining through the wetlands to Lawless Creek, which runs 1,400 feet northwest of the quarry. Wastes include hundreds of buried drums; tires; scrap rubber; approximately 15,000 gallons of a mixture of MS-20 (a floor degreaser containing PCE), water, carbon black, and detergent; off-specification batch materials containing trace amounts of lead oxide; soil; tobacco scraps; and wood. The Record of Decision (ROD) provides a final remedy for all site media including the landfill material, leachate, the Carbon Black Pile and Waste Pile, and the contaminated Northern Drainage soil and sediment. The contaminants of concern are metals including antimony, arsenic, lead, barium, and zinc. The selected remedial action for this site is included. |
