Abstract Pathogenic enteric viruses transmitted via the water route present a potential hazard to public health because of their resistance to natural or artificial disinfection mechanisms. Of constant concern to public health officials is the ability of viruses to pass through water treatment plants. Therefore, many research investigations have been directed toward the study of the inactivation of viruses and enteric organisms. This report describes a mathematical model which can be used to characterize the response of viruses to a disinfecting agent. Not only is the model presented, but a technique is described which can be used to estimate the model's parameters. Both the model and the estimation technique are being used to analyze experimental information resulting from disinfection studies.
