Abstract The inflow, outflow, and in-lake water quality and quantity of Utah Lake in Central Utah was studied over a 36-month period. The work was undertaken to determine the effect of a proposed diking project on the quality and quantity of lake water and to develope methodology for determining the effect of diking or other management practices on the quality of water in any lake system. A Computer simulation model was developed which is able to analyze the effect of a given management program on the water quality of the lake, particularly as related to the 'conservative salts' present. The simulation model was also used to evaluate the evaporation from the lake by use of a salt balance technique. Results of the research indicated that the diking of Utah Lake will have a positive beneficial effect upon the water quality of the lake and will also result in considerable saving of water and reclamation of valuable land.
