Abstract |
The review focuses on three disorders--asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Particular emphasis is directed toward the latter two maladies. Chronic lung diseases either cause or contribute to an increasing number of deaths throughout the world. Practical measures for identifying persons who have chronic respiratory disease, particularly through the use of standardized questionnaires, are described. The review cites studies from several countries that explore the distribution and the etiology of chronic respiratory disease, including the effects of air pollution. Most studies have confirmed the initial observation that the most important factor in the natural history of chronic respiratory disease is smoking, particularly cigarette smoking. Occupational exposure is also important, with workers in dusty occupations evidencing an excess of chronic respiratory disease. |
