Abstract An illustrated key to 42 genera and 161 species of Blue-green algae is provided. Information on the environmental requirements and pollution tolerance of these species was compiled from 430 references and summarized on profile sheets. It is suggested that this information be employed to evaluate data from plankton and periphyton samples collected for the assessment of water quality.
