Abstract |
A study was made of the phosphate manufacturing point source category for the purpose of developing effluent limitations guidelines, Federal standards of performance, and pretreatment standards for the industry. For the purpose of this study, the phosphate manufacturing industry was defined as the manufacture of the following chemicals: Phosphorus (and by-product ferrophosphorus), phosphoric acid (dry process only), phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorus pentasulfide, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride, sodium tripolyphosphate and the calcium phosphates. Effluent limitations guidelines were developed as a result of this study, defining the degree of effluent reduction attainable through the application of the best practicable control technology currently available and the best available technology economically achievable. The standards of performance for new sources were also defined. Processes, wastes, and costs are also discussed. |
