Abstract The report gives results of a laboratory evaluation of 'impinge-release' and 'fish-avoidance' concepts for protecting fish larvae at cooling water intakes. Impinge-release requires a vertical-traveling screen that limits impingement time to several minutes, the maximum time depending on the species to be protected. A stationary slotted screen in flowing water was used to evaluate the ability of fish to avoid entrapment. Both concepts showed high potential for protecting larvae as well as older life stages.
