Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence and control of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water treatment plants around the United States. Prior to the initiation of the sampling program significant development work was required to make analytical methods available and reliable for conducting the study. Collection and analysis of water samples from 35 treatment facilities was conducted quarterly for one year to examine the occurrence and seasonal variability of a list of DBPs, including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloketones, haloacetonitriles, and others. Special studies were conducted at a number of treatment plants to observe the impact of treatment practice on finished water DBP formation. The impact of using alternative primary disinfectants, particularly ozone and chlorine dioxide, was observed. Other studies examined the use of increased alum dose to control DBPs and DBP precursor removal by granular activated carbon.
