Abstract This document summarizes the findings of field surveys and a test program to assess chrysotile asbestos emissions generated by vehicular use of unpaved roads surfaced with crushed serpentinite rock. Included in this document are discussions of Federal asbestos regulations, sampling and analysis procedures, human health effects, and various emission control techniques. EPA believes that asbestos emissions which occur from unpaved roads and other dusty sources surfaced with serpentinite should be reduced to the greatest extent practical. Local, State, and Federal agencies responsible for road maintenance in the limited areas where asbestos emissions occur are in the best position to assess local conditions and implement the most appropriate control measures.
