Abstract This research project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of settling ponds and several types of granular media filters for removing residual fine solids from the effluent of a conventional, high-rate, rock media trickling filter plant when alum is applied ahead of secondary clarification. Two pilot settling ponds, one covered and one open, were operated at detention times ranging from 8 to 30 hr. Two pilot granular media filters were operated at filtration rates ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 1/sec/sq m (1.5 to 3.0 gpm/sq ft). The filters were operated in both downflow and upflow modes, with various media used in each operational mode. Very modest improvement in final effluent quality, generally less than 25 percent, was observed.
