Abstract |
The Abex site is a former brass and bronze foundry in Portsmouth, Virginia. Land use in the surrounding area is mixed residential, commercial, and light industrial. The site is located approximately one-half mile west of Elizabeth River, within the 500-year floodplain for the South branch of the River. The Elizabeth River Basin is heavily industrialized and receives wastewater discharges from U.S. Naval facilities, heavy industry, treatment facilities, urban runoff, and boating and docking facilities. From 1928 to 1978, Abex operated a facility that melted used railroad car journal bearings into sand molds to cast new railroad car bearings. |
