Abstract |
I have recently been made aware of results of toxicity studies on several carpets and on 4-phenylcyclohexane (4-PC) that the Environmental Protection Agency should address in its on-going consideration of the risks associated with certain carpeting. The studies were conducted by Anderson Laboratories of Dedham, Massachusettes and involved exposure of groups of four mice to carpet emissions and, in separate experiments, to 4-PC at levels of ca. 0.2 ppm (2 ppm 'as methane'). I understand that EPA will be receiving notification and details on these results from Anderson Laboratories within a short time. Anderson Laboratories has been doing toxicological testing of products and air samples using the protocol of ASTM Method 981 E, and this protocol was used in the carpet and 4-PC tests. I enclose several graphic representations of the preliminary tests that Anderson Labs sent to me. The most significant piece of information from these tests is that some, but not all, carpet causes marked adverse pulmonary and nervous system responses in mice, and the pattern of response to 'complaint' carpet is close to that seen for 4-PC tested alone. I understand that Anderson Laboratories indicated to the Carpet and Rug Institute some time ago that toxicological effects which had not previously been observed were seen in these studies. |
