Abstract Operation of advanced wastewater and water supply treatment plants to assure virological safety of the effluent relies on each unit process removing a finite number of viruses. These treatment plants frequently use chemical coagulation and precipitation at high pH with hydrated lime as part of the process. These treatment methods offer important opportunities for removal and inactivation of viruses from water and wastewater. This report is a literature review which examined the effectiveness of these processes in removing viruses.
