Abstract Environmental management of refineries and terminals has developed from early efforts to reduce locally offensive pollution problems to their present status of a major activity in their design, siting and operation. Today, environmental control mechanisms are usually based on specifying environmental parameters to achieve the required environmental objectives. The factors taken into account include the ecosystem itself, the total pollution load on it from all sources, and the pollution load from the specified refinery or terminal. The purpose of this overview document is to create awareness of environmental issues in oil refineries and terminals and to provide basic information to manage them.
