Abstract Sufficient quantitative and qualitative information concerning water and sediment chemistry, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, in addition to a limited number of physical parameters between April 1972 and May 1973 was collected to establish an environmental baseline for the Welland Canal - Rochester near-shore zone. This information could be of value in evaluating future ecological changes in the aquatic region as well as in the construction of water intakes, beaches, power generating plants and other shoreline projects. The study area could generally be characterized as oligotrophic to mesotrophic. The lowest quality conditions were observed at the Genesee and Niagara River mouths. The thermal bar functioned as a barrier which kept the more nutrient enriched water on the shoreward side of the bar. Cladophora growth appeared to be limited by suitable substrate for attachment and the extent of wave action rather than chemical factors. The physical nature of the sediment also appeared to be of major importance in determining which benthos were found in which regions of the study area.
