Abstract The report, which has been reviewed by industry experts, reflects the experience developed in successfully applying combustion modifications to reduce NOx emissions from coal-fired utility boilers. Although the report emphasizes coal-fired equipment, the same principles can be applied to gas- and oil-fired systems. Techniques, methods, and step-by-step procedures are detailed by example to guide utility personnel who may desire to conduct their own NOx emission reduction programs. Background information on operating parameters affecting NOx, necessary to understanding NOx emission control, is also included. Field studies were conducted from 1971 to 1979 to assess the feasibility of combustion modification to control NOx and other pollutants from large utility boilers. During these investigations, significant NOx reductions were demonstrated. For example, using a combination of staged combustion, low excess air firing, and other techniques reduced NOx by an average of 38%, over a range of 12 to 62%, in more than 35 utility boilers.
