||A computer based technique for analyzing distribution patterns among estuarine organisms was developed and tested on phytoplankton collections from Pamlico River. Jaccard's coefficient of similarity was used to generate a similarity matrix with final printout in dendrogram form showing clusters of collections having inherent similarity. Use of a similarity index based solely upon presence or absence of species within all possible pairs of collections (raw data) produced a dendrogram which described the seasonal periodicity of phytoplankton in the central Pamlico River.
