Abstract The relative risks to man from radionuclides released to the environment depend heavily on their accumulation or concentration by aquatic organisms. The organisms which accumulate those radionuclides present in the environment may be useful as indicators for environmental monitoring purposes. In addition, these organisms may be directly in food chain pathways to humans. Literature is reviewed and summarized in regard to biological concentration of radionuclides in freshwater and marine environments. Concentration factors for elements found in organisms are tabulated for plants, invertebrates, and fish in marine and freshwater environs. Literature is also reviewed on models developed to calculate the possible radiation dose delivered to humans from radionuclides released into aquatic environments.
