||Asphalt roofing manufacturing processes and the types of air pollution control devices applied to them are described. Quantitative data on controlled and uncontrolled particulate and gaseous emissions, including polycyclic compounds, from the asphalt blowing and felt saturating processes are provided. Information on plant locations, production rates, and industry growth is included. Total uncontrolled particulate emissions from felt saturating, consisting largely of organic particulate compounds, averaged from 3.9 to 8.7 lb per ton of saturated felt; CO and gaseous hydrocarbons were also emitted. Control devices reduced these emissions by about 50%. Seven identified polycyclic organic compounds accounted for 0.0003% of the particulate matter both before and after control. These data indicate that a well-operated plant equipped with available control devices does not have a major impact on ambient air concentrations.
