Abstract |
Depending on their size and activity, adult humans breathe 10,000 to 20,000 L of air daily. Contaminating particles enter the body in this volume of air and are potentially hazardous. Exposure to myriad micro-organisms, smokes, dusts, allergens, and other toxic aerosols is a feature of everyday life. Moreover, the same thinness, delicacy, and vast surface area that make the air-blood barrier ideal for the rapid exchange of O2 and CO2, decrease its effectiveness as a barrier to deposited particles. |
