Abstract The common purpose of the activated sludge process is to remove organic material from suspension and solution. As applied to the treatment of radioactive waste the purpose is to remove inorganic isotopes from very dilute waste water solutions. Laboratory studies in nine-liter bottles on the development and control of activated sludge fed with common foods were made. One of the objectives of these studies was the control of a biological process having adsorptive properties which may be used for removing radioactive wastes from liquors normally deficient or devoid of organic food for zoogleal organisms.
