Abstract The decomposition of landfilled waste results in a gas which can be a source of pollution as well as a resource. Of the more than 6,000 active municipal solid waste landfills in the United States (U.S.), there are 114 landfill gas (LFG) energy projects. This paper describes the options and economics for LFG utilization, as well as ongoing research associated with encouraging/facilitating energy recovery from LFG. The health and environmental concerns are described as well as the economic, environmental, and energy benefits associated with LFG utilization. Six case studies are also provided to illustrate the options for LFG utilization. In addition, the results of a recent EPA survey of U.S. LFG utilization are provided.
