Abstract This report presents the results of a program that was intended to demonstrate the emission control benefits of catalytic reduction of NOx. The program objectives included the outfitting of three vehicles with catalytic systems and the accumulation of 50,000 miles of durability operation. The system selected was the Gould dual catalyst system. This system included a base metal (Ni-Cr alloy) reduction catalyst, a conventional noble metal oxidation catalyst, programmed secondary air injection, modified carburetion and revised spark timing. This system was installed in three 1975 Chevrolet Novas. Prior to the start of testing, it was discovered that the base metal catalyst formulation was susceptible to chemical attack and depletion by sulfur impurities present in typical pump gasoline. The program was held in abeyance while Gould attempted to develop a sulfur resistant formulation. Gould succeeded in developing a formulation with increased resistance to the sulfur impurities in fuel; however, a corresponding reduction in catalytic activity prevented the achievement of the 0.4 NOx emission level. The decision was then made to terminate the contract and prepare a final report which would present the work accomplished under the contract. (Portions of this document are not fully legible)
